Pilot readiness and fallback
A traffic trial is an implementation activity requiring a reviewed design and resources. It is not an
experiment that exposes children to an untested arrangement to obtain data. Engineering and
authorized school officials should decide whether a trial is appropriate after the desk comparison and
controlled checks.
Before a trial
Evidence of readiness
Authority and design
Written approval for campus operation and any public-road change;
engineer-reviewed plan and required specialist checks.
Physical preparation
Required controls in place, verified walking/loading arrangement, accessible
routes and emergency access.
Operating coverage
Trained duty roster, actual staff availability, backups and communication with
bus and childcare operators.
Communication
Approved family map and start date; accessible and translated notice as
needed; support for affected households.
Controlled rehearsal
Adult-only or otherwise protected review of turning, loading and handoff
arrangements before student operation.
Fallback and suspension
Named person authorized to pause the trial; pre-approved safe fallback and
prompt notification route.
Proposed suspension triggers
Pause the affected movement and obtain responsible review for a credible dangerous conflict, inability
to maintain required supervision, an obstructed emergency/accessible route, unplanned vehicle-
pedestrian interaction, or spillback beyond the engineer-approved limit. Pre-agree the exact
operational thresholds and authority rather than improvise them during dismissal.
Decision after the trial
Record whether to retain, adjust, extend or end the arrangement using the comparison measures,
observed exceptions and actual staffing/cost. A retained option must have a continuing operating and
maintenance owner. A trial with unresolved prerequisites should be deferred with an interim protection
