About Audit Newport News
Local journalism. Public evidence. Accountability.
Audit Newport News is an independent local news agency serving Newport News, Virginia. We publish original reporting, investigations and commentary, supported by public records and attributable sources, to advance transparency, due process and accountability.
Founded by Kevin. Our work examines decisions affecting residents, students, employees, and public money.
Our mission
Audit Newport News is a news agency first and foremost. We gather, verify, and publish information about Newport News so people can understand the decisions, institutions, and public issues that affect their lives.
Our accountability journalism asks practical questions: What happened? What do the records establish? Who is responsible? What remains unanswered? The word “Audit” reflects this reporting mission. Our publication scope explains how this independent newsroom relates to official agencies and source material.
What we cover
Our coverage includes local government, public schools, public spending, workplace conditions, safety, policy, and civic life. We pursue stories through documents, public meetings, attributable sources, and relevant responses.
- News & investigations. Original reporting that connects events and decisions to the evidence behind them.
- Analysis & commentary. Clearly identified interpretation, proposals, opinion, and satire, with factual claims subject to editorial checking.
- Public records & context. Source documents, dated employee and officeholder information, and official resource links that help readers examine a story independently.
Documents and directories support the journalism. Their source dates, limitations, and qualifications matter when assessing what they establish.
How we report
We aim for accurate, fair reporting with enough context to distinguish documented facts, allegations, disputed accounts, analysis, and opinion. An official record tells us what that record says; it does not automatically establish that every underlying allegation is true.
Verification includes checking sources, dates, identities, quotations, and the scope of evidence. Serious criticism calls for relevant perspectives and a meaningful opportunity to respond, consistent with the circumstances. We identify material corrections and updates so readers can understand what changed.
Read our detailed reporting standards and correction and response process. Specific errors, missing context, or new evidence can be submitted through publication requests.
Editorial independence
The editor is responsible for verification, publication, corrections, source handling, and the public records collection. Coverage should serve the public interest and remain independent of the people and organizations covered.
Material personal, professional, political, or financial relationships relevant to a report should be disclosed. Sponsored material and paid placements, when applicable, must be identified. Payment or other benefits must not determine favorable coverage or suppression of a report.
Funding information is not published here. Source citations and external links do not imply sponsorship or financial support. Our publication policies provide further context on editorial responsibility and disclosures.
