What can you do to protect your property from flooding?
Most homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover flood damage. A separate flood insurance
policy will cover damages caused by flooding and allow you to recover more quickly following a
disaster. Contact your insurance agent or visit www.floodsmart.gov today to learn more about
purchasing a flood insurance policy. In addition to flood insurance coverage, there are a variety
of measures that can provide your property with enhanced flood protection.
New construction: Consider elevating your home and utilities above the required 2-foot
freeboard, limiting impervious surfaces, installing flood vents if you have a crawlspace, and
installing a rain barrel to collect runoff.
Existing structures: Consider installing flood barriers, improving/maintaining drainage
systems, elevating your utilities, and installing a rain barrel to collect runoff. If your home is on a
crawlspace foundation, consider installing flood vents. Check out the FEMA Homeowner’s Guide
to Retrofitting at https://bit.ly/RetrofittingGuide for additional options.
