June 17, 2024 Dear Sir or Madam: Subject: Property Flooding and Insurance Information You have received this letter because your business provides insurance, lending, banking or real estate services within the City of Newport News. The below information is to inform you and your clients of flood-related property mapping and information services provided by the City to property owners. These services are intended to make our residents more aware of potential flood risk and of City programs and information services available. News updates: • In April 1, 2022, the City of Newport News successfully joined the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS). • The City is undertaking a multi-year, master planning effort to tackle flooding challenges. Through this effort, current and future flood impacts are being assessed to develop long-term solutions to flooding. • The master planning efforts create the opportunity to advance our status in the CRS and further increase flood insurance policy discounts available to the residents through the NFIP. • Policyholders in the City are eligible to receive a 15% discount on flood insurance thru the NFIP at the present time. This saving is a tangible result of the flood mitigation activities our community implements to protect lives and reduce property damage. • Visit this website (https://www.nnva.gov/2837/Stormwater-Master-Planning- Effort) to learn more and keep an eye out for upcoming outreach events.
