July 11, 2025 Dear Sir or Madam: Subject: Property Flooding and Insurance Information You have received this letter because your business provides insurance, lending, banking, or real estate services within the City of Newport News. The information below is to inform you and your clients of flood-related property mapping and information services provided by the City to property owners. These services are intended to make our residents more aware of potential flood risk and of City programs and information services available. News updates: • On April 1, 2022, the City of Newport News successfully joined the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS), making NFIP policyholders eligible to receive a 15% discount on flood insurance premiums. • Great news – due to the city’s continued efforts to study current and future flood risk and share risk information within our community, that discount will increase to 20% on October 1, 2025. • Public Meetings – Keep an eye out for meeting notices when we’ll be in your neighborhood to share what we’ve learned about the future of flood risk in Newport News and strides we are making to build a more resilient city. Periodic updates and more flood information can be found in the Newport News Now e-newsletter here: https://www.nnva.gov/2121/Newport-News-Now. • Visit our updated Floodplain Management webpage (https://www.nnva.gov/2982/Floodplain-Management ) and Flood Resilience webpage (https://www.nnva.gov/2988/Flood-Resilience) to learn more. Flood Protection Services: City staff are available to assist you and residents with questions regarding flood risk: 1. Basic Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) information: The City provides basic FIRM information that is needed to write a flood insurance policy, including if the property is in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), the date of the FIRM, the FIRM zone, base flood elevation, where shown on the FIRM. This information is mapped in GIS and is available to property owners and renters for their specific properties. 2. Additional areas at flood risk: Additional information may include: areas mapped and regulated outside of the SFHA, limits of moderate wave action, as well as dam inundation zones. 3. Natural floodplain functions and if the property is located in, or partially in, a mapped Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area: Floodplains offer a broad area for streams and rivers to spread out and accommodate temporary storage of floodwater. When runoff is uncontrolled, the floodplain can be pushed beyond its capacity and areas that normally do not experience flooding may flood as a result.
