2. Additional FIRM information: Additional information may include: areas mapped and regulated outside of the SFHA, limits of moderate wave action, as well as dam inundation zones. For questions or assistance regarding additional FIRM information please email Mr. Howard Nelson at nelsonhr@nnva.gov. 3. Natural floodplain functions and if the property is located in, or partially in, a mapped Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area: Floodplains offer a broad area for streams and rivers to spread out and accommodate temporary storage of floodwater, reducing flood peaks and erosion potential. When runoff is uncontrolled, the floodplain can be pushed beyond its capacity and areas that normally do not experience flooding may flood as a result. The City currently protects these floodplain functions through the designation of buffer areas called Resource Protection Areas (RPAs), which are mapped. For questions or assistance regarding RPA maps, please email Mr. Howard Nelson at nelsonhr@nnva.gov. 4. Historical Flood Information: Knowing historical flood information about a property will allow your clients to better understand their flood risk and potential measures that can be taken to mitigate that risk. City staff can provide this information to you or the property owner or renter. For questions or assistance, please email Mr. Hai Tran at tranhn@nnva.gov. 5. Help promote risk awareness and flood insurance: • Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. However, because our community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), homeowners and renters can purchase a separate flood insurance policy. This insurance is backed by the Federal government and is available to everyone, even properties that have been flooded. Because the City participates in CRS, NFIP flood insurance policyholders receive a 15% reduction in the insurance premium. • Many people have purchased flood insurance because it was required by the bank when they acquired a mortgage or home improvement loan. Usually, these policies just cover the building’s structure and not the contents. During a flood event, there is usually more damage to the furniture and contents than there is to the structure. Help encourage your clients to obtain coverage on their contents. • Encourage your clients not to wait for the next flood to buy insurance protection. In most cases, there is a 30-day waiting period before NFIP coverage takes effect. • Reproduce and share the enclosed factsheet – Do you know your Flood Risk? with your clients.
