1. Basic flood insurance rate map (FIRM) information: The City maintains basic FIRM information that is needed to write a flood insurance policy including if the property is in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), the date of the FIRM, the FIRM zone, base flood elevation where shown on the FIRM and elevation datum used on the FIRM. This information is mapped in GIS and available to property owners and renters for their specific properties. For questions or assistance regarding basic FIRM information please email Mr. Howard Nelson at nelsonhr@nnva.gov. 2. Additional FIRM information: Additional information may include: areas mapped and regulated outside of the SFHA, limits of moderate wave action, as well as dam inundation zones. For questions or assistance regarding additional FIRM information please email Mr. Howard Nelson at nelsonhr@nnva.gov. 3. Natural floodplain functions and properties located in, or partially in, a mapped Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area: Floodplains offer a broad area for streams and rivers to naturally spread out and accommodate temporary storage of floodwater, reducing flood peaks and erosion potential. When runoff is uncontrolled, the floodplain can be pushed beyond its capacity, and areas that normally do not experience flooding may flood as a result. The City currently protects these floodplain functions through the designation of buffer areas called Resource Protection Areas (RPAs), which are mapped. For questions or assistance regarding RPA maps, please email Mr. Howard Nelson at nelsonhr@nnva.gov. 4. Historical Flood Information: Knowing historical flood information about your property will allow you to better understand your flood risk and will allow you to assess specific measures you can take on your property to mitigate this risk. City staff can provide this information for property owners. For questions or assistance, please email Mr. Hai Tran at tranhn@nnva.gov. 5. Get a flood insurance policy: • Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. However, because our community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), you can purchase a separate flood insurance policy. This insurance is backed by the Federal government and is available to everyone, even properties that have been flooded. Because the City participates in CRS, NFIP flood insurance policyholders receive a 15% reduction in the insurance premium. • Many people have purchased flood insurance because it was required by the bank when they acquired a mortgage or home improvement loan. Usually, these policies just cover the building’s structure and not the contents. During the event of a flood, there is usually more damage to the City of Newport News, 2400 Washington Avenue, Newport News, VA, 23607 Phone: (757) 933-2311 Fax: (757) 926-8300 Website: www.nnva.gov
