Subject: Property Flooding and Insurance Information
You have received this letter because your property (or part of your property) is located
in a Special Flood Hazard Zone (SFHA), generally referred to as the 100-year Floodplain.
In an effort to educate property owners and/or current residents about living in the
floodplain, each year we reach out to share news updates and remind you of the flood-
related services we offer.
News updates:
• In April 1, 2022, the City of Newport News successfully joined the National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).
• The City is undertaking a multi-year, master planning effort to tackle flooding
challenges. Through this effort, current and future flood impacts are being
assessed to develop long-term solutions to flooding.
• The master planning efforts create the opportunity to advance our status in
the CRS and further increase flood insurance policy discounts available to the
residents through the NFIP.
• Policyholders in the City are eligible to receive a 15% discount on flood insurance
thru the NFIP at the present time. This saving is a tangible result of the flood
mitigation activities our community implements to protect lives and reduce
property damage.
