Dear Current Resident/Property Owner:
Subject: Repetitive Flooding of Property
You have received this letter because your property is in an area that has been flooded
several times. We want to share important information about new resilience initiatives
and how you can reduce your personal flood risk.
News updates:
• On April 1, 2022, the City of Newport News successfully joined the National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) making NFIP
policyholders eligible to receive a 15% discount on flood insurance premiums.
• Great news – due to the city’s continued efforts to study current and future flood
risk and share risk information within our community, that discount will increase
to 20% on October 1, 2025.s
• Repetitive Loss Plan Completed - This plan provides flood risk information for
twenty floodprone neighborhoods in the City including areas bordering Salters
Creek and Newmarket Creek and offers property-specific recommendations to
help protect you and your property from future flood damage. You can find the
plan here: https://tinyurl.com/NN-Repetitive-Loss-Plan.
• Public Meetings – Keep an eye out for meeting notices when we’ll be in your
neighborhood to share what we’ve learned about the future of flood risk in
Newport News and strides we are making to build a more resilient city. Periodic
updates and more flood information can be found in the Newport News Now e-

Flood Protection Tips:
1. Check out the Repetitive Loss plan and reach out to City staff to discuss your
personal flood risk. Department staff can tell you about the causes of repetitive
flooding, what the City is doing about it, and what would be an appropriate flood
protection level.
