3. Natural floodplain functions and properties located in, or partially in, a mapped Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area: Floodplains offer a broad area for streams and rivers to naturally spread out and accommodate temporary storage of floodwater, reducing flood peaks and erosion potential. When runoff is uncontrolled, the floodplain can be pushed beyond its capacity, and areas that normally do not experience flooding may flood as a result. The City currently protects these floodplain functions through the designation of buffer areas called Resource Protection Areas (RPAs), which are mapped. 4. Historical Flood Information: Knowing the history of flooding on and near your property will allow you to better understand your flood risk and will allow you to assess specific measures you can take on your property to mitigate this risk. Purchase flood insurance: • Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. However, because our community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), you can purchase a separate flood insurance policy. This insurance is backed by the Federal government and is available to everyone. Because the City participates in CRS, NFIP flood insurance policyholders receive a reduction in the insurance premium. • Many people have purchased flood insurance because it was required by the bank when they acquired a mortgage or home improvement loan. Usually, these policies just cover the building’s structure and not the contents. Keep in mind, there is typically more damage to the furniture and contents than there is to the structure. Be sure you have coverage on your contents. • Don’t wait for the next flood to buy insurance protection. In most cases, there is a 30- day waiting period before NFIP coverage takes effect. • Contact your insurance agent for more information on rates and coverage. We know flooding can have a lasting impact, and we want to work with you to help you understand your personal flood risk and explore solutions.
