The City currently protects these floodplain functions through the designation of buffer areas called Resource Protection Areas (RPAs), which are mapped. 4. Historical Flood Information: Knowing the history of flooding for a property will allow your clients to better understand their flood risk and potential measures that can be taken to mitigate that risk. City staff can provide this information to you or the property owner or renter. Help promote risk awareness and flood insurance: • Homeowner’s insurance does not cover damage from floods. However, because Newport News participates in the NFIP, homeowners and renters can purchase a separate flood insurance policy. This insurance is backed by the Federal government and is available to everyone, even properties that have been flooded. Further, because the City participates in CRS, NFIP flood insurance policyholders receive a discount on the insurance premium. • Many people purchase flood insurance because it is required by the bank when they acquired a mortgage or home improvement loan. Usually, these policies just cover the building’s structure and not the contents. During a flood event, there is usually more damage to the furniture and contents than there is to the structure. Help encourage your clients to obtain coverage on their contents. • Encourage your clients not to wait for the next flood to buy insurance protection. In most cases, there is a 30-day waiting period before NFIP coverage takes effect. • Reproduce and share the enclosed postcard – Flood Savvy, Flood Safe with your clients.
