July 11, 2025 Dear Current Resident/Property Owner: Subject: Property Flooding and Insurance Information You have received this letter because your property (or part of your property) is located in a Special Flood Hazard Zone (SFHA), generally referred to as the 100-year Floodplain. In an effort to educate property owners and/or current residents about living in the floodplain, each year we reach out to share news updates and remind you of the flood-related services we offer. News updates: • On April 1, 2022, the City of Newport News successfully joined the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) making NFIP policyholders eligible to receive a 15% discount on flood insurance premiums. • Great news – due to the city’s continued efforts to study current and future flood risk and share risk information within our community, that discount will increase to 20% on October 1, 2025. • Public Meetings – Keep an eye out for meeting notices when we’ll be in your neighborhood to share what we’ve learned about the future of flood risk in Newport News and strides we are making to build a more resilient city. Periodic updates and more flood information can be found in the Newport News Now e-newsletter here: https://www.nnva.gov/2121/Newport-News-Now. • Visit our updated Floodplain Management webpage (https://www.nnva.gov/2982/Floodplain-Management) and Flood Resilience webpage (https://www.nnva.gov/2988/Flood-Resilience) to learn more.
