7. Protect Natural Floodplain Functions: Floodplains offer a broad area for streams and rivers to naturally spread out and accommodate temporary storage of floodwater, reducing flood peaks and erosion potential. When runoff is uncontrolled, the floodplain can be pushed beyond its capacity, and areas that normally do not experience flooding may flood as a result. Floodplains also serve important functions. A vegetated floodplain slows the surface runoff and can improve water quality by filtering out pollutants. Do your part in reducing flooding and protecting the floodplain’s natural functions by keeping leaves, debris, or grass clippings out of waterways, and reducing impervious surfaces. We know flooding can have a lasting impact and we want to work with you to explore solutions. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact our 311 contact center: online at https://www.nnva.gov/311/Contact-Center, by email at 311@nnva.gov, or by phone: 757-933-2311.
