What are additional requirements for building in the SFHA?
There are several potential additional items that may need to be addressed when building in the
SFHA:
■ Land Disturbance Permit: All development within the SFHA
requires a Land Disturbance/Virginia Stormwater Management
Program (VSEMP) Permit. Land disturbance permit applications
are submitted online. Complete an application online at https://
bit.ly/CustomerSelfServicePortal.
■ Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area Requirements: The
Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area (CBPA) includes lands
within 100 feet of wetlands and tidal shores. All development
and redevelopment within the City’s CBPA must go through
either subdivision or site plan review. See the Handbook for
Development in the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area at https://
bit.ly/CBPAHandbook for further details.
■ Site Plan Requirements: The proposed location and magnitude
of a project determine the extent of the City review. Forms and
applications for Site Plan and Subdivision reviews are available and processed through the
Department of Planning - Development Services. Contact developmentservices@nnva.gov or
call 757-926-8761 before submitting any forms or applications.
What other documentation is needed?
■ A Federal Emergency Management Agency Elevation Certificate, National Flood Insurance Program
prepared by a licensed surveyor, is required to confirm your home, Elevation
property, and equipment elevations in relation to the estimated Certificate
height 1% of annual floodwaters could reach. Elevation certificates and Instructions
2022 EDITION
are an important tool for ensuring compliance with building code
standards and are required for both new construction and substantial
improvements for before, during, and after construction. A blank
Elevation Certificate form with instructions can be found online at
https://bit.ly/fema-form. Other forms may also be applicable, such as
an Engineered Flood Vent Certification and V Zone Certification. Check
with the Permit Office for more information.Jump to an indexed page (75 of 75)
