Newport News Program for Public Information Upon request, the City is available to answer questions about financial assistance grants available to individual property owners interested in mitigating the negative effects of flooding. V. FLOOD INSURANCE PROMOTION (ACTIVITY 370) As discussed above in Step 2, the City has completed an assessment of the current level of flood insurance coverage and identified opportunities to improve the level of coverage. Efforts underway to boost the acquisition of flood insurance include the promotion of NFIP flood insurance on its Stormwater Master Planning and Flood Information web pages as well as on social media. Information about flood insurance has also been distributed via direct mailing campaigns to repetitive loss areas and homes and businesses in the SFHA. The Know Your Flood Risk fact sheet, which includes the promotion of flood insurance, has been distributed both online and in paper format at public meetings. The City is also aiming to distribute this fact sheet at City Hall. Beyond the local efforts noted above, the City is a supporting locality of the regional outreach campaign, GetFloodFluent.org, spearheaded by the HRPDC to encourage area residents to purchase flood insurance.
