Newport News Program for Public Information The PPI Committee was also able to view and test ArcGIS Online map products, as shown in Figure 9, that were developed under the City’s Stormwater Master Planning Effort. At the recommendation of the Committee, the City plans to enhance the existing GIS interface or create a new platform to share the variety of map layers discussed above in an easy-to-use public viewer. II. HAZARD DISCLOSURE (ACTIVITY 340) Beginning in January 2022, Section 55.1-708.2 of the Virginia Code requires that “the owner of residential real property located in the Commonwealth who has actual knowledge that the dwelling unit is a repetitive risk loss structure shall disclose such fact to the purchaser” (Residential Property Disclosure Act, 2021). A form is provided by the Real Estate Board on its website for the disclosure. The Virginia REALTORS® (2019) provides a flood insurance broker tool kit on their website and maintains a Legal Hotline, which is available for any seller who may have questions about disclosing flood hazards. III. FLOOD PROTECTION WEBSITE & ALERT SYSTEM (ACTIVITY 350 & 620) The Newport News Emergency Management Department maintains a Flood Information webpage. It contains information regarding types of flooding, flood zones, stream gauges, storm surges, evacuation zones, person and property protection, and the NNAlert system. The Stormwater Division’s webpage also features information about stormwater initiatives, operations and maintenance, and a 311 Contact Center link and form to submit a service request for stormwater and drainage issues. It also features information about the Stormwater Master Planning Effort, which is developing outreach materials and citywide plans for Stormwater, Floodplain Management, and Climate Change & Resilience. This webpage collected resident experiences with flooding through a public survey and provides educational materials on all of the CRS priority topics. Additionally, the City issues severe weather alerts via website banners. The City is making website updates that include information on the priority topics identified by the Committee above.
