Newport News Program for Public Information
STEP 5: EXAMINE OTHER PUBLIC
INFORMATION INITIATIVES
In addition to the outreach projects outlined in the previous section, the PPI
Committee examined other public information efforts that aligned with the
distribution of flood safety and mitigation information under several CRS activities.
I. MAP INFORMATION SERVICE (ACTIVITY 320)
The Newport News Engineering Department maintains a public library of interactive
GIS maps. The City publicizes the availability of the map resources and encourages
residents to reach out to the Engineering Department to learn if their property is
located in a SFHA and with other map-related inquiries (see Appendix II through IV
for example letters issued in 2023). In addition to sharing map products that feature
flood risk information, including flood elevations, risk zones, flood depths, etc., map
layers featuring the following flood mitigation and safety information are available:
• Emergency management: evacuation zones, flood zones, StormSense
• Environmental: Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas, streams, waterbodies,
wetlands
• Planning & Development: Future land use, opportunity zones, overlay
districts, zoning
• Public Safety: Fire departments, hospitals, police departments
• Stormwater: ditches, drainage basins, end sections, gravity mains, manholes,
inlets, and national Watershed Boundaries
