45 Newport News Police Department 2024 Annual Report LOOKING AHEAD In 2025, we will continue our commitment to reducing crime, particularly violent crime, in Newport News. Building on the strategies that have worked well for us in the past, we are excited to continue to explore innovative approaches and best practices from across the nation. The challenge of youth violence is one we take seriously, and we are dedicated to collaborating with our community partners in finding solutions. As demonstrated in 2024, the Newport News Police Department is ready and enthusiastic about tackling these issues. Together, we can create a safe environment for everyone, especially our youth, empowering them to thrive and succeed. With the unwavering support of City Management, the Newport News Police Department is ready to make substantial investments in technology that consistently demonstrate effectiveness in preventing and solving crime. Our commitment to public safety is underscored by the strategic expansion and the installation of additional cameras throughout the city which serve as powerful tools for the Department. We will also be expanding our Drone Program in 2025. We have already begun the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within our Crime Analyst Unit and will continue to seek out other innovative crime-fighting technologies that AI can help facilitate. The recent relocation of our Basic Law Enforcement Academy marks a significant advancement in our ability to train a greater number of officers at the same time, ensuring that our department remains well- staffed and equipped to meet the needs of the community. The introduction of simulation training in 2025 will transform our preparedness, allowing for the design of custom scenarios that specifically target essential skills and situations, thereby enhancing our officers’ ability to prevent and solve crime. At the Newport News Police Department, we are deeply committed to fostering the next generation of leaders within our ranks, recognizing that effective leadership is a principle that transcends industries. To achieve this, we are actively seeking to collaborate with esteemed experts in leadership development from all over, ensuring that we implement best practices that elevate our department and enhance our service to the public. By embracing innovative training practices, we aim to empower our officers to become great leaders, fostering a culture of inclusivity and flexibility that reflects the diversity of Newport News. It continues to be a privilege for me to work with the dedicated men and women, both sworn and non- sworn, of the Newport News Police Department. Their unwavering commitment to public safety and community engagement inspires me daily, and I am filled with excitement about the promising future that lies ahead for all of us. Steve Drew Chief of Police City of Newport News
