Newport News Police Department 2024 Annual Report
Homicide Support Group
The NNPD Homicide Support Group provides a safe and open space for individuals to share their
experiences and emotions with others who share the same experiences. The Group serves as a vital
resource and a comforting presence for many who have been affected by violence. In 2024, the NNPD
Homicide Support Group successfully sponsored a gun violence awareness walk. The event was held to
shed light on the issue of gun violence and to honor the memories of those who lost their lives or were
impacted by this tragic reality. NNPD Detectives play a vital role in making this a successful endeavor and
have developed lasting bonds with members of the NNPD Homicide Support Group.
Running Code Podcast
In late December of 2023, NNPD launched
Running Code, a podcast that offers a
unique perspective on law enforcement
and the individuals who keep our
communities safe. Each month a team
member, joined by our hosts, share their
stories about why they chose law
enforcement and a little about themselves.
Our guests have included Assistant Chiefs,
Captains, Patrol Officers, Forensic
Specialists and more. This year, Running
Code was featured on a national show
titled “Public Relations Review Podcast.”
Capt. Tietjens, one of the hosts and
members of NNPD’s Public Information
Office discussed the origins and strategies
behind Running Code on the PR Review
Podcast with host Peter Woolfolk.
Chat with the Chief
Every month, Chief Drew conducts a
Facebook Live session, demonstrating his
unwavering commitment to transparency
and community engagement, core values
of the Newport News Police Department.
These interactive forums are open to
everyone, providing a vital platform for
open communication between the police
department and the citizens they serve.
Chief Drew uses this opportunity to update
residents on the latest happenings within
the police department, ensuring that the
community is informed and involved in
public safety matters.
