Newport News Police Department 2024 Annual Report
Expansion of K9 Unit
This year, NNPD’s K9 unit added four new K9 officers and handlers. These highly trained dogs have
exceptional olfactory abilities, enabling them to detect drugs and explosives, locate missing persons,
track suspects, apprehend criminals, and protect officers. They significantly enhance police operations
and public safety by offering capabilities that humans cannot match, often acting as a powerful deterrent
to criminal activity due to their presence alone. With the addition of K9 River, K9 David, K9 Ramsez and
K9 Roscoe, NNPD now has a team of eight K9s.
Community Coalition Against Domestic Violence
In May of 2024, the Community Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) marked the one-year
milestone of community members coming together to promote healthy relationships and bring
awareness to domestic violence. Guided by the expertise of NNPD’s Domestic Violence Specialist, the
coalition has empowered individuals to come together, share their experiences, and strategize
meaningful actions to combat domestic violence in the community. CCADV and NNPD stand firm as
supportive partners in this endeavor, promoting initiatives that encourage open conversations about
healthy relationships.
