1 Newport News Police Department 2024 Annual Report MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF The Newport News Police Department (NNPD) experienced a significant decrease in violent crime in 2024. Shootings were down by 25% and homicides by a little over 50%. We attribute this to effective crime reduction strategies, including work with our state and federal partners. During the summer, when spikes in violent crime often occur, we worked with the Virginia State Police to once again participate in Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Bold Blue Line initiative where State Troopers partner with NNPD officers in increasing patrol and focusing on the apprehension of known violent offenders. In 2024, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our detectives, NNPD surpassed the FBI’s national clearance rates in every category, with the exception of homicide, where we fell short by a mere 1.3%. NNPD recognizes the impact that unsolved homicides have on families and is committed to providing closure for those affected. Behind every unsolved homicide is a family looking for answers. That’s why in 2024, we formed the Cold Case Team tasked to work solely on unsolved homicides. The Newport News Police Department was awarded national re-accreditation on March 23, 2024 by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in three areas: Advanced Law Enforcement, Public Safety Communications, and the Public Safety Training Academy. In 2024, NNPD successfully earned re-certification as a Certified Crime Prevention Community through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. This achievement underscores NNPD’s unwavering commitment to enhancing community safety and reflects the collaborative efforts of our dedicated team. As one of only 12 jurisdictions out of 400 in Virginia to hold this prestigious certification, NNPD demonstrates its proactive approach to fostering a secure environment for all residents. In order to further enhance recruitment efforts, NNPD launched a new career portal. This innovative platform is designed to make it easier for aspiring officers and dispatchers to connect with the Department. With a user-friendly interface, the career portal simplifies the application process and provides valuable resources for those interested in joining NNPD. At the Newport News Police Department, we understand that strong community relationships are the cornerstone of effective policing. Our officers actively engage with residents to foster trust and collaboration. We believe that when officers and community members work together, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone. Steve Drew Chief of Police City of Newport News
