Newport News Police Department 2024 Annual Report
2024 HIGHLIGHTS
Certified Crime Prevention Community
The Newport News Police Department is
proud to announce its successful re-
certification as a Certified Crime Prevention
Community through the Virginia
Department of Criminal Justice Services.
This achievement underscores the
Department’s unwavering commitment to
enhancing community safety and reflects
the collaborative efforts of the dedicated
NNPD team. As one of only 12 jurisdictions
out of 400 in Virginia to hold this prestigious
certification, NNPD demonstrates its
proactive approach to fostering a secure
environment for all residents.
CALEA Accreditation
The Newport News Police Department was
awarded national re-accreditation on
March 23, 2024 by the Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement
Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in three areas:
Advanced Law Enforcement, Public Safety
Communications, and the Public Safety
Training Academy. NNPD received re-
accreditation as follows:
Meritorious and twelfth year
accreditation award for Advanced
Law Enforcement;
Fourth year accreditation award for
Public Safety Communications
Center Accreditation; and
Fourth year accreditation award for
Public Safety Training Academy.
NNPD was one of only 3.5% of all agencies around the country to have earned the CALEA TRI-ARC
Award, which includes accreditation in all three of the above areas.
Cold Case Team
In 2024, NNPD assigned a new team to work solely on unsolved homicides. The Cold Case Team consists of
two full-time homicide detectives and one investigator, a retired homicide detective. Together, they bring
over 80 years of combined experience in law enforcement with an emphasis on complex investigations.
The team works closely with the victims’ families and utilizes a holistic approach to crime prevention
through community engagement and resource accessibility.
