NNPD organized multiple free events that provided citizens with resources for vehicle and crime
prevention. NNPD is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and their
property. In addition, the ongoing partnership with the Virginia State Police (VSP) through the Help
Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program exemplifies this commitment. Each year, VSP honors law
enforcement agencies across Virginia for their efforts in combating auto theft. In 2024, NNPD was
recognized as a finalist in the Agency Award category. Additionally, several members of the Department
received the prestigious Public Outreach Award for their exemplary work on this critical initiative.
NNPD Chaplains Program
The Chaplains who serve the Newport News Police Department are vital pillars in fostering relationships
within both the law enforcement community and the broader public. Within the department, chaplains
play a multifaceted role, offering spiritual and emotional support to officers and civilians, aiding in crisis
intervention, and contributing to the overall mental well-being of the Department. They participate in
outreach programs, community events, and educational initiatives. In 2024, NNPD chaplains donated
over 1, 500 hours of service.
