Newport News Police Department 2024 Annual Report
YOUNG ADULT POLICE COMMISSIONERS
The Young Adult Police Commissioners (YAPC) Program has become a cornerstone of youth engagement
in the Newport News community, fostering a strong connection between the youth of our community
and the Police Department. The Program was originally designed to include one freshman, one
sophomore, one junior, and one senior from each Newport News public high school. However, during the
2024-2025 Swearing-In Ceremony, Judge Tyneka Flythe officially swore-in 47 students. This achievement
is a testament to the unwavering commitment of both NNPD officers and civilian coordinators who work
tirelessly to make the program a success.
Participants engage in meaningful conversations with police recruits, sharing their expectations as young
adults while gaining insights into the challenges faced by officers. They learn about the inner workings of
NNPD. They have the opportunity to speak directly at NNPD ceremonies, sharing their perspectives.
Ultimately, the experience and lasting bonds formed, while participating in the program, serve to build
positive relationships with the youth of our community and the Newport News Police Department.
