48 Newport News Police Department 2025 Annual Report LOOKING AHEAD In 2026, the Newport News Police Department will remain firmly committed to sustaining the progress made in reducing crime, particularly violent crime, across our city. By continuing to apply proven strategies and data-informed practices, we aim to maintain both crime reduction and exemplary clearance rates. Addressing youth violence remains a priority, and we will continue working closely with community partners to support prevention efforts and long-term solutions. Our shared goal is to preserve a safe environment where all residents — especially our youth — can thrive. The Department will remain focused on maintaining our CALEA accredited status and upholding the highest professional standards. We will make thoughtful, targeted investments that support effective policing and enhance public safety outcomes. In 2026, this includes further incorporating drones as first responders to improve response efficiency, situational awareness, and officer safety, while ensuring responsible and transparent use. Recruiting and retaining qualified candidates will remain a central focus in 2026 with the goal of becoming a fully staffed department. Ongoing enhancements to training, including scenario-based and simulation exercises, will continue to reinforce essential skills and readiness. Equally important is our commitment to officer wellness. In 2026, we will strengthen wellness initiatives that support the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of both sworn and non-sworn personnel. By prioritizing wellness, we support a resilient workforce capable of delivering consistent, high-quality service to the community. It remains a privilege to serve alongside the dedicated men and women of the Newport News Police Department. Their professionalism, dedication, and service to the community are the foundation of our success. As we move into 2026, we remain committed to maintaining progress, supporting our personnel, and meeting the expectations of those we serve.
