Newport News Police Department 2025 Annual Report
MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
On the heels of significant
decreases in both non-fatal
shootings and homicides in 2024,
the Newport News Police
Department experienced another
remarkable year for crime
reduction in 2025. Homicides
dropped another 22 percent year-
over-year to a 12-year low, while
non-fatal shootings decreased by
21 percent to the lowest figure
since at least 2008.
Many factors have played a role in this effort. The department, with help from city
leadership, continues to be on the cutting edge in technological advancements for public
safety. The addition of more license plate readers and drones, plus the purchase and
implementation of the new VirTra 300 Police Simulator, are tangible signs of the
investments we are making in training and investigations.
Our clearance rates continue to impress. In 2025, they exceeded the national averages for all
departments in every crime category. This wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and
ingenuity of our officers and detectives.
In 2025, we continued to invest in officer wellness by adding a new cell phone app,
AlliConnect. AlliConnect’s predictive wellness program empowers proactive mental fitness
and connects officers with crucial resources for their mental wellbeing.
In a day and age where many police departments nationwide struggle with significant
manpower shortages, NNPD enters 2026 on the verge of a remarkable feat – having a fully-
staffed complement of sworn officers. Internal referrals and the department’s reputation in
the community continue to be driving factors in recruiting new talent.
The major reason for the successes of this department is the diligence of the men and women
who work here. Their unwavering dedication and tireless hard work are the cornerstone of
our success, and it is an honor to work with them each and every day.
