14 Newport News Police Department 2025 Annual Report COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The Community & Youth Outreach Division (CYOD) of the Newport News Police Department is dedicated to fostering trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the community it serves. With over thirty-five community-related programs offered throughout the year, CYOD provides valuable opportunities for residents of all ages to engage, learn, and contribute to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Newport News. Among the standout initiatives of the CYOD are the Citizen's Police Academy and the Hispanic Citizen's Police Academy. These programs are designed to educate participants about the workings of the police department, enhance understanding of law enforcement practices, and promote transparency. Youth in our community is a priority for NNPD. The Young Adult Police Commissioners Program is another important offering, aimed at empowering young people to have a voice in public safety discussions. In 2025, NNPD worked closely with the Newport News Police Foundation to conduct a series of camps for school age children which were well-received. Another important component of the CYOD Division is the City’s School Resource Officers. These dedicated officers play a vital role in creating a safe and nurturing learning environment for middle and high school students. Their presence not only helps to ensure the safety of our schools but also fosters a supportive atmosphere where students can thrive academically and socially. As you will see in the following pages, the Community & Youth Outreach Division, along with most officers and civilians, stay busy year-round, making sure they stay connected to the citizens they serve.
