Expansion of Environmental Officer
Program
In 2025, NNPD added two full-time Environmental
Officers - one in each precinct. The Environmental
Officers are committed to changing the environment to
help mitigate and prevent crime. While they play a role
in environmental protection,
their main focus is quality
of life issues for citizens
and crime caused by blight.
AlliConnect
Officer well-being is of utmost importance to the leadership of
NNPD. In 2025, NNPD contracted with AlliConnect, an
interactive predictive wellness program and empowers proactive
mental fitness, unites peer support teams, clinical resources.
AlliConnect provides an easy-to-use suite of digital wellness
products that connect first responders with therapists, self-help
and peer support tools.
Amazon Connect
NNPD is
dedicated to
enhancing the
efficiency of
its 911 Center, which manages over
200,000 calls for service annually - just
for police. They answer calls for the
Newport News Fire Department and
Sheriff鈥檚 Office, as well. Recognizing that
many inquiries received through the non-
emergency number are repeat questions,
NNPD partnered with Amazon Web
Services (AWS) to implement an
automated system for handling designated non-emergency calls. This allows dispatchers and
call-takers to assess the nature of incoming calls and, when appropriate, transfer non-
emergency inquiries to administrative lines.
