Our jail, like jails and

country, are not just
holding
people
ac-
cused or convicted of
crimes. We provide
care
to
meet
the
needs of persons with
a mental illness.
A large number of people coming into the Newport
News City Jail are in need of psychotropic medication—
drugs
that
affect
a
person’s
mood,
behavior,
perception, and thoughts. While medications are not a
cure for mental illness, they can help manage the symp-
toms.
