19 Professional Standards Bureau-Recruiting/Retention The Newport News Sheriff’s Office continues to rise to the challenge to find men and women who meet the requirements to serve the community as a deputy sheriff. Our dynamic recruitment strategy has greatly reduced the application-to- offer time frame. The year 2024 saw a six per- cent increase in the number of applicants com- pared to 2023. However, about four percent of all applicants made the cut, which didn’t keep up with turnovers due to retirements or resignations. Most new employees in 2024 were Black and African-American women, continuing our commitment to have a diverse workforce that reflects the Newport News community.
