Additional identification information for General Intellectual Aptitude No singular score or criterion is exclusively used to determine a child's eligibility for inclusion or exclusion from the Gifted Services Program. The committee overseeing eligibility may request supplementary information if necessary or choose to defer the decision until additional data is available. Moreover, the committee may consider scores from other norm-referenced abilities if such information is accessible. If the student's performance suggests a need for acceleration, whether in grade or content, a decision is made at the school/school district level, with input as needed from the Gifted Services Department. ● As part of the Equity Initiative, Gifted Services staff will review 3 year trends of referral and identification for gifted services at all schools. For schools with historically low referrals and identification of students, members of the Gifted Services team will collaborate with school staff to model lessons designed to promote higher-level thinking, discuss culturally and linguistically diverse student characteristics, and encourage the referral process. The Gifted Services staff will also collaborate with the Student Support Services and Special Education Department for potential twice-exceptional students and the ELL Department on data for students who are exiting ELL services as students for referral. ● Explorers Talent Development Program (K-1): Throughout the year, Gifted Resource Teachers will provide kindergarten and first grade classrooms across the district with enrichment lessons designed to demonstrate gifted characteristics and higher level thinking skills. Gifted Resource Teachers will then collaborate with kindergarten and first grade teachers to identify students who demonstrate gifted characteristics, higher level thinking and problem-solving skills. Observation tools and referral forms are available and should be submitted to Gifted Services at the end of the year. These students will create a pool of potential students for referral in first grade for gifted assessment for the Expedition Program beginning in second grade. Expedition Program (2nd grade) criteria includes, but are not limited to VALLS, aptitude test, pre and post formative and summative assessments, family evaluation, teacher evaluation of gifted characteristics, traits, and behaviors.
