SCHOOL ZONE (S1-1) SIGNAGE AND OTHER SCHOOL ZONE
EHANCEMENTS STUDY FOR THE DISCOVERY STEM ACADEMY ON
CHESTNUT AVENUE
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Engineering received a request from Mr. | | in September
concerning signage of the school zone for Discovery STEM Academy at 1712 Chestnut Avenue.
Shortly after, Mr. [sent correspondence to the Newport News School Board, the City
Attorney鈥檚 Office, and the City Council expressing his concern for the safety of students and the
community, due to speeding and the lack of traffic control compliance with State Code, as well as
the Manual Of Uniformed Traffic Controlled Devices (MUTCD). An image of the established
school zone is shown below in Figure 1 and the location of the existing school zone signs are
shown in Figure 2.
