EBB - Threat Assessments
The School Board directs the Superintendent to establish a threat assessment
team for each school and the division at large. School-based teams may serve
one or more schools as determined by the Superintendent. The teams will
assess and intervene with individuals whose behavior may pose a threat to
the safety of school staff or students consistent with the model policies
developed by the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety including
procedures for referrals to community services boards or health care
providers for evaluation or treatment when appropriate.
Each school-based team will include persons with expertise in counseling,
instruction, school administration and a school resource officer. New threat
assessment team members must complete an initial threat assessment
training prior to joining a threat assessment team and all threat assessment
team members must complete refresher threat assessment training once
every three years. Each team will:
e provide guidance to students, faculty and staff regarding recognition
of threatening or aberrant behavior that may represent a threat to
the community, school or self;
e identify members of the school community to whom threatening
behavior should be reported; and
e implement policies adopted by the School Board; and,
e follow all Newport News Public Schools procedures regarding threat
assessments.
